Florentenes

This New Band Spotlight features Bolton band Florentenes.

Florentenes are a four-piece from Bolton. They’re made up of Liam Fiddy (drums), Harry Stubbs (bass), Luke Holding (lead guitar), and William Smith (lead vocals).

Will and Luke met at school aged 12 and have been writing and jamming ever since. Their debut EP ’14:17’ was released in 2024 and was recorded at the iconic Rockfield Studios with legendary producer Dave Eringa (Idlewild / Ocean Colour Scene / Manic Street Preachers). To date, they have also supported The Royston Club and Jamie Webster; let’s see why:

Death While Standing

Spangled’s playful sense of punk-psyche links arms with math rock, Hadouken, and the devil on this gloriously bizarre breakthrough single.

Glue

An intro that makes the Arctic Monkeys sound like Real Estate eventually stomps into life via The Strokes and The Undertones. Smith’s feral vocal will evoke your favourite small vocal being shaken to its core among fellow sweat-ridden fans losing their minds!

Jonny Blade

This New Band Spotlight features Sherburn act Jonny Blade.

Jonny Blade comes Sherburn, a small town in North Yorkshire. His musical journey began when The Lottery Winners shared a video of him covering their song ‘Favourite Flavour’ on the ukelele and then invited him on stage to recreate it at the Gorilla Beer Hall in Mexborough.

*image credit: Dan Crosfield (Crosfield Content)

From then on, his love of Gerry Cinnamon and Pablo Carizo drove him into guitar music, and, recently, he has been rewarded with a slot on tour with The Lilacs.

Let’s see what he has been up to:

Repeat Offender

Straddling the line between artist and rock star, Blade pivots from excess to introspective with an ease that could blur the lines of rock ‘n’ roll forever more.

There is an excellent sense of drama and theatre in his guitar playing. Blade nods to the likes of Cinnamon and Dylan John Thomas on the acoustic guitar, but it’s dystopian howl on the electric guitar, which connects with his haunted vocal to provide the real intrigue.

Electric Sheep Inc.

This New Band Spotlight features Rhyl band Electric Sheep Inc.

Electric Sheep Inc. are a five-piece hailing from Rhyl. They’re made up of Cameron Kelly (guitar), Christian Pimley (vocals) Jacks Jones (guitar) Josh Jones (bass), and Dan Howard (drums).

After wowing a packed Inn on the Green at last year’s Shiiine On, their 2025 looks destined to go on to bigger and better things. Let’s see what they have been up to:

Queen’s Nose

Breathtaking defiance set to the grooves of Happy Mondays with hints of Lou Reed! Frontman Pimley’s gravel-tinged Ryder vocal is beset with rage and angst that will breed an uprising of fans!

Taste of It

The Rhyl outfit give ‘Bummed’ a raw injection of aggression and makes the baggy sound ready to fight 2025 and win!

The Optimists

This New Band Spotlight features the Isle of Wight band The Optimists.

The Optimists are a four-piece indie rock band from the Isle of Wight. They include frontman Matt Read, lead guitarist Aaron Meakin, drummer Jacob Cass, and bassist Henry Bolton.

To date, they have supported indie royalty in Rosellas, The K’s and The Kairos, so let’s see what they have been up to:

Chase The Sun

The brashness of early Idlewild and the feral melodies of Seafood emerge alongside a unifying hopefulness. It allows the underground to emerge from the shadows and the mainstream to retake a step towards credibility.

The relentlessness of The Silver Lines comes alive in this startling single. Vibrant and poignant, The Optimists are blessed with the intense joy and melancholy that all great coming-of-age bands possess.

Ordinary Day (Ordinary Town)

The sex drugs and rock’n’ roll of Miles Kane’s debut album is reborn via Mellin’s stomping guitars!

Before things spiral out of control, Mellin’s melodic uplift allows this spikey record room to breathe and is all the better for it.

You and Your Friends

The Ordinary Boys meet Cian Dowling as this mod-cum-rock n roll number sways from fierce licks to great romantic melodies.

Mixed Signals

This New Band Spotlight features Ayrshire band Mixed Signals.

Mixed Signals are a five-piece from Ayr. They’re made up of Ben Gardiner (rhythm guitar & vocals), James Armstrong (lead guitar), Leon Calder (bass guitar), Nathan Christie (drums), and Marta Leslie (keys).

They’ve recently sold out Audio in Glasgow, and in a few weeks, they return with Heavy Weather and Resister for This Feeling’s Big in 2025.

Let’s see what they have been up to:

Are You Satisfied?

Calder’s destructive bassline throbs menacingly alongside the cacophony of guitars. It provides a fine platform for Gardiner’s vocals to wrestle with the tension and provide a much-needed chink of light in an otherwise devastating wall of sound.

Destination Unknown

Sumptuous guitar lines from Armstrong entwine themselves around Gardiner’s eloquent vocal and build to a life-affirming crescendo.

Having supported Corella, The Royston Club, and Andrew Cushin already, Long Island are set to play This Feeling’s Big in 2025 in Leeds.

Let’s check them out:

Young

The sonic of being young, of teenage longing to escape, collides with lyrics of yearning for that time.

An instant classic which can be all things to all people. The tinge of melancholy in the lyrics wraps itself around the thrill-seeking guitars to conjure images of epoch-defining moments for a new generation!

Panhead Sharps

This New Band Spotlight features Dunfermiline band Panhead Sharps.

Panhead Sharps are a three-piece from Dunfermline in Scotland. John Simpson (vocals & lead guitar), Michael Watson (bass), and Troy Leggatt (drums) formed the band back in 2022.

Let’s see what they have been up to:

What Have I Become

Filthy rock 'n roll guitars drag you into the mire for a hellacious night out. The emboldening dirge of the Black Keys' early work gives a fine appraisal of this beast.

When Are You Falling

A gentler rumble but lyrically more astute, thus lifting its power to match their heavier work. Vocally, Simpson has bedded between Ebbot Lundberg (The Soundtrack of Our Lives) and Nic Cester (Jet). His smoky blues drawl is continually captivating and lays a platform for the band to grow around him.

Cottons

This New Band Spotlight features Manchester band Cottons.

Cottons are a four-piece indie outfit from Manchester made up of Jasper, Charlie, Ricky, and Jack.

*image credit: Austin Kendrick. Courtesy of This Feeling

They’ve played Bearded Theory and supported the righteous Fat Dads on tour. They’ll play Factory 251 in Manchester for This Feeling’s ‘Big In 2025’ in less than a month.

Let’s see what they have been up to:

Old Skool Town

Classic alternative social observation, filtered through the prism of Blossoms and Maccabees songwriting styles. The angular licks build steadily, providing a refreshing tonic for a bloated scene.

Tip Of My Tongue

Released last August, its measured melancholic licks burrow into the heartstrings whilst the vocals search for escape.

Their ability to build anxiety through melancholic melody suggests great indie introspection could emerge from their studio time.

The Reserves

This New Band Spotlight features Liverpool band The Reserves.

The Reserves are a four-piece from Liverpool. They consist of Corrin Melia, Shaun Cowley, Em McDermott, and Rob Gillies.

Formed back in 2022, they have been making a name for themselves in their home city since their debut single, ‘Woman With a Plan’.

Let’s see what they have been up to since:

Parallel

The demonic intro recalls the punkadelic brilliance of The Blinders’ debut album ‘Columbia’. What subsequently unfurls is a masterclass of the Bunnymen and the Mary Chain. Images of smoke-filled stages and riotous crowds flood the senses on this devil-sent gem.

White Lies

Stomping drums and crunching basslines are scythed through with a deliciously melodic vocal. Cinematic and dystopian sonically, the hope distilled via the vocal sows the seeds of artistic rebellion on the purist kind.

A band with devastating potential!

In 2022 she released her debut album ‘Belonging’. Last year, she returned with ‘Meteorites’, the lead single from her upcoming second album.

Let’s check it out:

Meteorites

There’s something beautifully organic about her songwriting. Otherworldly angelic, she shines a light on what the common man fails to notice until too late. Vocally, Bird finds a place between Kate Bush and Beth Gibbons (Portishead).

The era of the artiste is reborn via Bird’s dramatic storytelling.

Sunspells

This New Band Spotlight features the North London band Sunspells.

Sunspells are a four-piece from North London. They’re made up of Oliver Taylor, Edward Taylor, Aaron Burke and Marley Chambers.

They’ve previously toured with the Mystery Jets and are about to go on tour with The Rifles alongside the release of their new single ‘Kelper’.

Let’s see what they’ve been up to:

Daisy Chain

With great funk comes great responsibility! MGMT meets Tame Impala at this single's most dynamic moments, giving it great instantaneous appeal.

In this spirit, Sunspells’ frontman beds in between James Bagshaw (Temples) and Kevin Parker (Tame Impala). Rather than lose themselves in the psyche, the little guitar nuggets of The Stands and La’s keep this hazy dream fresh and impactful.

When I’ve Gone Wrong

The big psychedelic riffs and synths of Tame Impala circa ‘Innerspeaker’ and ‘Lonerism’ are given a directness that, in turn, gives them colossal power.

Resister

This New Band Spotlight features Glasgow band Resister.

Glasgow band Resister formed at the back end of Covid when Robert Lang (drums, backing vocals) and Craig Morrison (Bass) saw their previous bands end. Shortly afterwards, they recruited Ross Caldwell (Lead Guitar, backing vocals), and Connor Dowell (Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar).

Let’s see what they have been up to:

Get Some

On the surface, a chest-beating anthem is yearning for stadium attention. Scratch beneath, though, and the desperation of slipping into bad habits reveals itself in the most intense climaxes.

Sarah

If ‘Get Some’ was a solid debut single, ‘Sarah’ is a spreading sophomore single. Caldwell and Dowell’s ability to play with light and shade on the guitar allows Dowell’s vocals to soar beyond the heights of Liam Fray and Yannis Philippakis.

The Rogues

This New Band Spotlight features Newport band The Rogues.

The Rogues are a five-piece band from Newport in South Wales. They’re made up of Andrew Flannelly (lead vocals & acoustic guitar), Rhodri Eley (lead guitar & backing vocals), Ben Slade (bass), Alex Ainsworth (lead guitar), and James Mundy (drums).

2025 is looking set to be a big year for the band. On February 6th, they line up for This Feeling at Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach, and on March 15th, they play London’s, Mascara Bar for Underground Sound.

Lizzy

The Lilacs triumphant 2024 has paved the way for the humble anthem to take its rightful place in the hearts of indie lovers once more.

Images of sweaty indie clubs becoming havens of joy flood the senses via Eley and Ainsworth’s escapist guitars, relieving everyday pressures.

Nice To Say Hello

Gloriously melancholy! The romantic beauty of Noel at his isolationist best (‘Dying of the Light’ / ‘Dead in the Water’) combines with the infectious licks of Luke Crowther (The Rifles) on this sumptuous ode to moving on.

Astoria

This New Band Spotlight features Dewsbury band Astoria.

Astoria are a five-piece from Dewsbury in West Yorkshire. They’re made up of Vinnie Smith (vocals & lead guitar), brothers Luke and Ben Etchells (both rhythm guitar), Alex Mawson (bass), and George Grady (drums).

On February 8th, they will play This Feeling’s Big in 2025 at Leed’s Brudenell.

Let’s check them out:

Dream Out Loud

The Etchell brothers and Smith’s guitars stray from the euphoric Danny McNamara to the ecstatic work of The Edge before Smith’s impassioned vocals catapult the single into the ether.

The Snow

The growl lingering on Smith’s vocal recalls Kelly Jones's early brilliance. Meanwhile, the guitars jangle with a ferocity that is yearning to break free. It’s a rock n roll tonic as old as time and, when done this well, is as fresh as ever.
