Peter Hall

Peter Hall – In Plain Sight

Nottingham’s Peter Hall follows the critical success of his debut album ‘Light The Stars’ in 2021 with the new single ‘In Plain Sight’. It was recorded and self-produced at his Daisyland Studio and marks the first run of new singles.

In Plain Sight is available via Bandcamp.

Hall’s vocals touch upon the pristine pop of Sice and the dogged beauty of Howie Payne on this cinematic pop gem. Hall’s vocals alongside the orchestration conjure a sense of wonder that can only come from a soul in love.

The carefree abandonment Hall journeys on are beset with so much joy that, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was literary nonsense (a la Lewis Carroll). However, luring beneath the sparkle is a man determined to look inwards and become easier to love. It adds depth to the musical splendour that Mick Head would be proud of.

Head rears his creative soul once again on the solo. Hall takes the windswept beauty of the Pale Fountains for a waltz with Weller’s gentle playing on ‘True Meanings’. It creates a glorious world of fantasy and love to indulge in.

Hall has not just returned, he has well and truly arrived as one of England’s finest songwriters.

Peter Hall – The Best Idea

Nottingham’s Peter Hall will release ‘The Best Idea’, via his Bandcamp page on 5th November. It is the second single to be released from his upcoming album, ‘Light The Stars’. Can it match the star quality of his debut EP ‘There’s Something Wrong with Everyone’.

It takes seconds to answer with an emphatic yes! Hall has such an effortlessness to his writing, it’s impossible not to embrace his world. The meanderings of Mick Head and the acoustic innovation of Badly Drawn Boy combine to create a crisp autumnal sonic.

Vocally, he strays from the icy brilliance of Elliott Smith to the warmth of Sice (Boo Radleys). This ability allows him to shapeshift from an isolated soul to one coming of age with cinematic appeal.

There is something inherently scouse about the Nottingham starlet, especially on the solo. Hints of Shack and Candy Opera permeate the touching moment, ever so forlorn but never downtrodden, it shimmers in the lowly October sun with grace.

On this showing, hall’s album is not to be missed.

Peter Hall - There’s Something Wrong With Everyone

Despite the debut status, Hall emerges with a class, usually associated with someone making their third album masterpiece. Opener ‘Hold Me, takes the eloquence of the early Bee Gees records and kisses them with delicate vocals of Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), the innocence of Elliot Smith and a sun drenched Colin MacIntyre (Mull Historical Society). Then, just when you think you have him pegged, it melts away into a Curtis Mayfield solo.

‘Everything Is Fading Fast’, re-imagines ‘Live Forever’ for the older and wiser folk. It acknowledges life is precious in way a younger polemic never could. However, it’s defiant, determined and living in the moment as if life depended on it.

Despite hailing from Nottingham, there is something beautifully scouse about his music. ‘Hold Me’ and ‘Blood Flow’ enter an alternate reality where Sice (The Boo Radleys) is backed by Crosby Stills and Nash’s harmonies. Meanwhile, ‘Everything Is Fading Fast’ has Shack’s forlorn jangle combining with The Stands’ Howie Payne vocals.

The biggest criticism of the EP is, it’s not an album. This is an astonishing EP and the entire world should know about!
