Lacuna Bloome

Niall Logue - Kestrel

The frontman of Lacuna Bloome has made his first foray into a solo project. ‘Kestrel’ was written and recorded in his bedroom with close friends Alex (also the producer) and Chris Butcher.

It must be some bedroom because this Is one hell of a polished ode to James Taylor’s ‘Carolina in My Mind’. Sumptuous but aching guitar licks of Jackson Browne guitars marry with Taylor’s classic tale of homesickness. Logue imparts less isolation and more a need to hit the reset button.

Through acoustic guitars and production, Logue manages to bring in the depth of The National. The reflective orchestration of ‘About Today’ and the catch 22 spirit of ‘Bloodbuzz Ohio’ elegantly sway as Logue’s sweet but defiant vocals gravitate towards something truly special.

Stepping out of the shadow of Lacuna Bloome, to fans would have been a difficult prospect. Their five singles were scintillating affairs. Here, Logue has dialled back the youthful exuberance but delivered something equally sublime.

Lacuna Bloome - My Girl Is A Supernova

With the commercialism of Christmas in full flight, the arrival of Lacuna Bloome’s romantic ode ‘My Girl Is A Supernova’ is perfectly timed. Released Wednesday 11th December, let their innocence and love soundtrack your festive season.

Previously, they have been concerned with re-imagining The Stone Roses for the modern-day. The last single ‘Plastic’ expertly does just that! ‘My Girl Is A Supernova’ witnesses their first real departure from their Mancunican idols. Sam’s guitars, subtler and straying into dreampop allow for Niall’s purist and his joyously romantic lyrics to truly shine before a crushing Robert Smith circa ‘Disintegration’ solo.

One thing that does remain from their love Roses is, the bass player and drummer had their moment in the sun too. Noah's drumming is the true star of this single. Devastating and life-affirming amid frontman Niall's couplets, he heightens thoughts of meeting the “one” tenfold.

Meanwhile, Molly's bass playing has taken on Mani and Simone Marie's (Primal Scream) ability to effortlessly link everything together with kick-ass hooks.

With the pop music adventure of Johnny Marr, The Cure, and Pet Shop Boys added to their arsenal, Lacuna Bloome continues to prove they are the hottest unsigned band in the UK.

Lacuna Bloome: Nambucca, London

Brighton’s Lacuna Bloome took time out from recording their new EP to play This Feeling’s 13th birthday party at Nambucca this past Saturday.

With the spirit of Stone Roses in their hearts, they delivered their brand shimmering rock n roll with aplomb.

The latest single ‘Plastic’ was a stunning piece of rock n roll and social comment. By the time frontman Niall bellows ‘yes it’s changing’, this crowd is either rushing with excitement or frantically messaging their mates to check them out.

Whatever they’ve have doing in the studio is paying dividends. Former singles ‘I Am’ and ‘Find Your Way’ sounded crisper and more dynamic than ever. Perhaps set-closer, a storming cover of ‘She Bangs The Drums’, has shown them their songs are can stack alongside Manchester’s finest.

With the EP coming in the new year, 2020 is shaping up bloody nicely indeed.

Lacuna Bloome - Plastic

Brighton four piece Lacuna Bloome release 'Plastic' on Thursday 19th September, the lead single from their upcoming EP recorded at Audiobeach Studios (Producer Forbes Coleman).

It's easy to be swept along by the majesty of their playing. However, on 'Plastic', they have delivered a stunning indictment of the times. With Blake and peak Ashcroft in their hearts, poetic summation and defiance oozes from their souls. The punk insight of Billy Bragg emanates from the line “What you see is out of plain sight / Drifting everywhere” but, frontman Niall sings, it's with Johnny Marr's heart.

Musically, Ride's pop tinged 'Future Love' collides with the thunder of Stone Roses' 'This Is The One'. The sun kissed psyche guitars loop to sail you away to hazy climates in the early stages before, blood sweat and tears of the closing stages bring you crashing to shore.

Those closing moments, they're more than bombastic rock n roll. As Niall wrenches “yes its changing”, something more than music is happening. This is a gut wrenching clarion call echoing the desperation of Ian Curtis on 'Closer'.

Hope has been sparse of late. Maybe, just maybe Lacuna Bloome are the catalyst for the change they passionately decree. Winter is coming but, it would appear this four piece are drawing their Jon Snow battle lines, get behind them and charge into the night!

Lacuna Bloome: Nambucca, London

Brighton's Lacuna Bloome are the perfect example of why the UK needs This Feeling. At This Feeling's 'Big In 2019', they were brilliant in flashes but by no means the finished article.

For some, that won't compel gig-goers to Lacuna Bloome's next outing. However, we urge you to be a part of this journey. Anyone who witnessed an early Emily Capell or Trampolene gig will attest to the notion of a long rewarding journey.

There were moments on 'Alright' and the latest single 'Find Your Way' that guitarist Sam Leaver founder the paisley spirit of John Squire. The little flourishes of Roger McGinn's psyche and the free-flowing nature of the Primals debut album had the Nambucca's crowd loosening those shoulders.

The ambition displayed on the closing two tracks brought a warm glow to an audience desperate to have more heroes migrate to bigger venues. It also allowed the band’s personalities to shine through. Frontman Niall, a steely introverted frontman is countered by the showman Leaver on guitars. Much like their idols, they have one of the most fluid drummers in the game in Noah Haines and, in Molly Walker, the coolest bass player since Mani.

Everything is coming together for this band, we urge you to be there sooner rather than later!
